MI Unions Endorse A Legacy of Staggering Population Losses and Failed Business Model For Governor In

MI Democrat Virg Bernero Gets The Endorsement of AFL-CIO To Continue Granholm’s Legacy Of Protecting Unions and Entitlements In Michigone.

Democratic candidate for MI Governor Virg Bernero received the political equivalent of the Granholm Legacy seal of approval today (Gov Granholm lookalike)

when the AFL-CIO and its 600,000 blue collar entitlement army endorsed him.

In an earlier post this Centrist wrote of how Michigan has a staggerling population exodus of striped-collar professionals to other states which are not 40th in the nation for per capita income; do not have a dysfunctional government which cant solve structural budget problems; do not have an economy that is primarily driven by a contracting auto industry but most of all they are fleeing higher taxes to pay for unsustainable benefits for government and service workers.

Its seems to be a fairly simple concept that is ignored or not understood by the career politicians in Lansing, MI. Residents who can, will leave the state for better opportunties AND the opportunity to not watch their ever shrinking household income go towards an outmoded service model of government in which things like this happen:

"To understand how insulated the Michigan Education Association is from the economic realities affecting the rest of the state, consider this: The employee who sorts the union's mail makes $64,000 a year. And secretaries in its headquarters make as much as top classroom teachers" (source:Detroit News)

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is the newly appointed heir and keeper of the entitlement legacy for Gov. Granholm. Virg Bernero is a mayor in a city which is the Capital of Michigan which in turn the capital of all dysfunction that plagues the state of Michigone.  It can certainly be said that Virg Bernero is getting the union endorsement to protect its 600,000 members from the economic realities are impacting those who are not what the union leaders call 'Working Americans'.

I guess those non 'Working-Americans' of Michigan, the ones that Michigan needs to have an economic rebound but are fleeing the state in droves wont be voting for Virg Bernero anytime soon and for good reason. They have fleed the abandonded industrial relic called Michigan in order to keep more monies in their pockets.

But their is hope that another Mayor in the once great state of Michigan does understand the economic realities outside of Lansing, MI.  Too bad that Mayor Bing of Detroit isnt running for Governor and getting the endorsement of the AFL-CIO. If that was the case then one would truly know that its time to make a u-turn and head back towards Michigan and the road to recovery.

To understand how insulated the Michigan Education Association is from the economic realities affecting the rest of the state, consider this: The employee who sorts the union's mail makes $64,000 a year. And secretaries in its headquarters make as much as top classroom teachers.

The MEA, the state's largest teacher and school employee union, has bitterly fought attempts to improve education using federal grant money as a lever. And it has resisted attempts to control rising public employee health care costs.

Meanwhile, union executives enjoy paychecks and perks that cushion them from the cost pressures squeezing all levels of government and most of their own members.

The pay figures were revealed in a recent survey by the Lansing State Journal, which analyzed federal Labor Department filings. It found that average MEA staff pay in the 2008-2009 fiscal year increased nearly 19 percent from the 2005-2006 fiscal year, while in 2009, the average increase for union staffers was 7 percent.

Pay, according to the report, is generous from the lowliest union staffer to the president. A payroll clerk earned $55,000, and some administrative assistants receive more than $80,000. President Iris Salters earned more than $239,000.

The MEA is a key public policy actor and political player. Its health insurance affiliate administers more than $1 billion in premiums that are ultimately paid by taxpayers.
