Schools in trouble |
Education is not in Trouble, American Society is!
There is so much talk about American education being in trouble. This observation is too shallow. Being a teacher of twenty years I can tell you this much. Two tough tasks that poor American teachers are saddled with are Discipline and Instruction. These tasks are not the same. Discipline comes from the Society, Instruction comes from teachers' Methodology. Doing the two simultaneously is almost impossible, especially when the Discipline is a byproduct of an enormous and complex American exploitive culture. American middle class Discipline problem has come from a Society which is too permissive, greedy and materialistic, overshadowing all tenets of Instruction and learning which are in methodic Transformations. Transformations are slow, and often subconscious processes.
The impact of this Discipline problem on Instruction is so great that most middle class schools have given up on the idea of doing Discipline and Instruction simultaneously. Instead they have become babysitting and human warehousing centers which are important functions by themselves. To solve this social problem an enormous dialogue with America must take place so first and outmost fairness and character of American family, as the basis of stability for school learning, are honored and rebuilt. Money must be spent to reverse the present trend of 'safe racism' practices which is by sending undisciplined and distraught students out of sight and mind to schools. The obscene wealth distribution of America which has become the genesis of family insecurity for not having any more focus to devote to serious learning must be directly addressed and eliminated.
Four short solution approaches to education problems are the following:
1.Make education accountable to reward of local job openings. In this manner teachers will have a better focus of what they should be teaching and students will have more motivation to meet the challenges of tough learning tasks. There is nothing wrong with giving local businesses 50% voice in education in return for guaranteed jobs for 50% of its graduates.
2.Create computer individualized curriculum so America's vast diversity in learning needs can be managed. Right now America is too diverse for its current group teaching Methodology.
3.Connect school, family and community through creation of citizen mentor systems that can support both students and teachers outside schools.
4.Pay and savor ALL good teachers with full time jobs and deserved social status--no milking of teachers with part-time, temporary and 'highway gypsy' jobs.
