Flooding in the Plains |
Red River pictures - 33 feet and rising
Here are a few pictures from this afternoon of the Red River of the North and one of a National Guard helicopter that flew overhead as I was snapping photos.
These were taken from the Veteran's Memorial Bridge on Main Avenue that connects Fargo, North Dakota, and Moorhead, Minnesota, when the river was at a level of 33 feet. The Red normally sits below 18 feet, so the Red River Valley is used to some flooding every year and can handle up to the 30-foot "Major Flood Stage" quite easily. This year's predicted 38-foot crest prompted more action and some additional levees to be built to help protect the city.
Most of these pictures are a view of the south, looking upstream.
