    China stores most nuclear warheads in secret underground base near Xian

    Most of China's estimated 400 tactical and strategic nuclear warheads are stored deep inside tunnels at the Taibai underground storage depot near the city of Xian.

    The private Project 2049 Institute said the facility is called the “22 Base,” and until recently had been kept totally secret within Chinese state-run press and military writings. “The Taibai underground complex is said to be equipped with an advanced physical protection system," the report said.
