JUSTICE FOR DANTE
An unfortunate event has occured in Atlanta where a young man has been unjustly sentenced to 35 years in prison to do 20 years before parole is even considered. Todd Dante Alexis who is 18 years old and just graduated high school at Miller Grove High School in 2009 was convicted of Armed Robbery of two counts, which 10 years is the minimum sentence for a first time offender ! Dante has never been in trouble before. Todd has faced so much adversity in his life and disappointments but he has never wavered. He was a faithful member of Berean Church in Stone Mountain, and worked two jobs at Phibbs Auto Sales and AJ Wright where he went right after school to work. He was also scheduled to attend college at Georgia Perimeter. How can we make a difference where our young men's lives are just thrown away like hardened criminals? In 1994 the Georgia General Assembly passed Senate Bill 440 (SB440) which gives the superior court exclusive jurisdiction to 13-17 year olds for the "Seven Deadly Sins" which include murder, rape, armed robbery.FACTS OF THE CASE In Dantes case there were two co defendants, who were caught at the scene of intending to do a armed robbery. Dante was not there. They later after submitting numerous statements that changed over and over again, that Dante was with them. During the case both codefendants who have previous armed robbery historys took a plea deal to serve 10 to 13 years. Dante as always in his life did not waver, he went to trial. During the trial we found out that there were no fingerprints on any of the guns that were Dantes. One of the victims described Dante as having long dreads to his shoulders " pulled back in a ponytail". Dante had dreads but never grew no more than an inch long. The prosecutor tried to link Dante to the criminal intent with a cell phone that made reference to "East Side Mafia" which she tried to insinuate was a gang. Dante was in a rap group called East Side Mafia" where he promoted parties at a local skating rink in Stone Mountain which he also has fliers to prove . The prosecutor also tried to say Dante was the ringleader of the trio, but in the trial it was found out that the two codefendants knew one another for almost two years. Dante knew one from being in his class for almost two month and the other for maybe one month. Does that sound like a ringleader to you? Dante has no criminal history but the codefendants do. Dante knew them both for maybe 2 months max, but they knew one another for maybe 2 years. If you have teenagers have you ever seen pictures of them on facebook or myspace or their cell phone that made you want to cringe? Unfortunately Dante had pictures in his cell phone of him holding guns where the DA tried to say was the same used in the armed robberies. Mind you the robbiers were done with pellet guns (fake). We have to do something about freeing this young man that was unjustly tried and convicted. As you read, please remember this could easily be your son.Dante is being held at Dekalb County Jail in maximum security with murderers and rapists, the worst of the system. He is on 23 hour lockdown where he only come out of his cell for 2 hours in a day. How can this happen to our young men who have so much poential and drive to be productive. Dante had is whole life ahead of him. It is heartwrenching to see a life wasted like he's a hardened criminal. We are setting up a fund for "Justice for Dante" where we are requesting a motion for a new trial to get this young man out of prison. Please assist in any way you can, every dollar counts. Teenagers make the mistake of being guilty by association all the time do they have to pay for it with their llife? There is a fund set up at Chase Bank that anyone who would like to support the release for Justice for Dante. You may walk in to make a contribution to the account.Any proceeeds will be given to the attorney that assists in his release and al other funds after his release will go to the mothers advocate for innocent children incarcerated !!
