This iReport is part of an assignment:
Health care reform and you
Such a Blessing
I have always been a strict conservative, but after my husband came down with a kidney disease, got laid off work, and we were without insurance my point of view has changed completely. Although I work for mental health therapists myself, I am not offered insurance at work.
My husband and I were financially strapped, with three young kids and literally thousands in medical bills we couldnt see any light at the end of the tunnel. We tried on our own to get medical insurance, but alot of companies didnt want to cover him because of his pre-existing condition, and the ones that would cover him, it was so expensive we couldnt afford it. Also, the insurance he had at his work before he got laid of sent us a letter saying because he had been declared disabled that we werent eligible for COBRA. After several trips to the local welfare office, we were told that we didnt qualify for a medical card because I had a job, and that he wasnt eligible for medicare for two years.
We finally were offered a spend-down card, and with our thousands and thousands of medical bills, we go every three months for a review, but we were able to get it.
After feeling the struggles of not being able to get treatment for someone you love who desperately needs it, I feel this bill is going to help so much. Health care shouldnt be just for the wealthy. Every deserves a chance to be healthy and get treatment when needed.
