Past & Present Rome, Piazza Barbarini

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     alisonv learned a lot about ancient Rome while shooting these photos. "It was a time when people did less traveling. The places which are in the center of Rome and filled with tourists now were then mainly meeting places for Romans," she said.
    - zdan, CNN iReport producer

The original Piazza Barbarini photo was taken in about 1860. (Photographer unknown) My photo was taken yesterday.

Piazza Barberini was named for the Barbarinis, an aristocratic Renaissance family.  (One of the Barberini sons eventually became Pope Urban VIII.)  Their symbol, the bee, can be seen on the Triton fountain (image 6) and on another nearby fountain.

The Fountain of Triton was built in 1643 by sculptor Bernini, who was a favorite of the Barberini family.
