Toxic America |
Old Gas Well Forgotten in Field
This is ExxonMobil's well #239. It was drilled in 1967. It's been shut-in and forgotten. Thousands of wells like this litter the South Texas landscape. It's dangerous. The pressure builds in these shut in wells. The metal corrodes. Gas and produced water rise towards the surface. The well heads hiss gas and ooze oily stuff. No telling what is oozing out of the corroded casing into the fresh water zones. The Texas Railroad Commission has rules about this - but they aren't actively enforced. Obviously!
