This iReport is part of an assignment:
Weekend assignment: How far can $10 go? |
Vegetables for a week for $ 10
This weekend, I converted USD 10 to the Bhutanese currency called Ngultrum (10 USD = 442.886) and I rounded it off to Nu. 443. I then headed to the Centenary Farmer’s Market to get my vegetables and fruits for the week. In Bhutan, we do not have supermarkets as such, so all farmers from nearby towns come to Thimphu over the weekend (Friday – Sunday) to sell their produces in the Farmer’s Market.
So for exactly Nu. 443 this is what I got:
½ kg Asparagus (Nu. 30) , ½ kg Fiddle Head (Wild fern) (Nu. 7), ¼ kg Garlic (Nu. 15), 1 kg Onion (Nu. 20), 1 kg Potatoes (Nu. 12), 1 kg Tomatoes (Nu. 25), ½ Beans (Nu. 30), ¾ kg of Pumpkin (Nu. 10), 1 bundle Coriander (Nu. 10), 1 kg Cabbage (Nu. 13), ¼ kg of Red Chili (Nu. 40), 1/2 kg Cucumber (Nu.16) , 1 bundle Chinese Green (Nu. 10), 1 bundle Spring Onion (Nu. 10), 1 dozen Banana (Nu. 30), about 2 kg Watermelon (Nu. 50), 2 sticks Sugar Cane (Nu. 15), and 1 kg Mango (Nu. 100).
This will feed our family of 5 for about 5 days.
