Blessing of the Bikes: Bikers Take to Church
- nsaidi, CNN iReport producer
Just in time for the opening of bike season, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, held its 12th Annual Blessing of the Bikes Ceremony this weekend.
Hundreds of cyclists, most in their riding gear, carried their bicycles up the steps and into the Cathedral where Reverend Canon Thomas P. Miller (Reverend Tom) offered the blessing.
With bikers forming a double line, a moment of silence was observed to remember riders who lost their lives during the past year in accidents throughout the city.
St. John the Divine, located in Upper Manhattan's Morningside Heights neighborhood, is the Cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and one of the largest cathedrals in the world.
Known locally as St John the Unfinished, it has been restored after a fire destroyed part of it in 2001.
