This iReport is part of an assignment:
Parenting with disabilities |
Disabled Mother of Two
My name is Jenny and I am a 30 year old mother of two beautiful daughters. I broke my back when I was 16 snow skiing and have an incomplete spinal cord injury. My daughters are 7 and 4. I work full time as an HR Professional. Being a parent with a disablity is a very unique and rewarding challenge. My children have grown up to respect the fact that everyone is different and they understand that people with disabilities are just like everyone else. They are active in our communities Wheelchair Sports organization which I have served on the board as. They get to try adaptive sports equipment right along with me, even though they don't have a disability. I have began to play Wheelchair tennis which is a sport that we can all play together as a family. We have also worked as a family to support a local Rotary community service project which built a completely accessible park in our town in which both parents and children can play together in the park.
I am also the leader of my daughers Brownie Girl Scout troop. I hope to teach the girls in my troop, that no matter what disability or other problem gets in their way, they can strive to reach the goals they set for themselves, no matter what.
