Parenting with disabilities |
Both Sides of the Story
I grew up with parents that both had polio. My mom was unable to work due to the effects of the disease. My father also had polio. Luckily, he was able to work. I was perfectly healthy. My parents made sure I never missed out on anything. There were of course things they did not do, but my brother and I never missed out. At the age of 23 I suffered a catastrophic injury that has left me a paraplegic. My mom knew exactly what I would be going through and what I would face. It has brought us closer together and we were even able to participate in an adaptive kayaking weekend together. It was amazing to be on the water and have that experience with her. She has been my inspiration and has shown me how much I still can do. She has never let anything stop her, nor will I.
