85 Year Old Woman---Oldest To Trek Stone Mountain's Summit Again

    by Tom Livsey,

Annette Livsey Merritt, of Decatur Ga. climbs to the top of Stone Mountain April 13, 2010. After bouts of some health issues the past year, this courageous recipient of a pacemaker in 2005, decided to reclaim her life by facing another physical challenge of climbing the largest outcrop of granite in the world, one more time. She is the oldest person to climb Stone Mountain to date.

Stone Mountain Park is Georgia's number one attraction in the state of Georgia. While there are many attractions for a family to enjoy on the 3,200 acre park, climbing up to the top of the mountain that sits 1,683 feet above sea level is reserved only for the most adventuresome.

You will actually experience a stairway to Heaven without stairs! Once on top you can see for over sixty miles on a haze-free day. It is an amazing view.

Though she had climbed the mountain many times in the past, April 28 1992 was the last time she did. So when asked why did she wanted to climb this beast again, Annette smiled proudly and said," I just wanted to climb it one more time".

She reveals, " We grew up without all of today's technology. We had no TV or radio...just a crystal set*. I was born before the depression, though we might had been poor, we did not know it, because we had everything we ever needed. We had to make our recreation, and we did because we had Stone Mountain to climb".

Mrs. Merritt triumphant return to the mountain was based on her strong faith in God, belief in herself and her physical abilities.

After months of thinking about her return to the top of Stone Mountain, she had thought out aloud to some of her church members at Bethel Baptist Church, but when pastor Bob Howard, mentioned her ambitions to climb the mountain again to the congregation, then the scene was finally set for her to make the climb.

Initially there were supposed to be about six other members to accompany Annette, however due to scheduling issues, only 75 year old Mr. Paul Bailey, was by her side from the bottom to the top of the Stone Mountain's summit.

This is the kind of story that everyone can embrace, for no one is promised a rose garden in life. We all will experience our fair share of suffrage, toil and monumental tasks.

However for those of us who choose to pull through these setbacks, hardships and obstacles in our lives., the taste of victory, the sense of achievement and the emotions of success awaits them. In Mrs. Merritt's case,"Ain't no mountain too high to climb". How about you?

    * Crystal radios are the simplest type of radio receiver and can be handmade with a few inexpensive parts, like an antenna wire, tuning of copper wire, and they are technically distinct in many respects from ordinary radios because they are passive receivers
