    Living with autism

    Mila's Story

Mila Trammell was dianosed with classic autism at the age of 18 months. She was non-verbal and cried on hours at a time. She had no eye contact and did not like to be held. With her early diagnosis, she received OT, ST, PT and one to one teaching and started a new program called the ABA pilot program at the Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing foundation. Within one year of the program she was non-verbal and spoke 600-700 words. She is considered high-functioning autism and now attends public school in a regular Kindergarten classroom setting. She is loved by her peers but still has trouble regulating her behaviors. She has a timeout chair as a behavior modification and the computer and playdough time is used as a reward for her good behavior all day. She still struggles with social skills, but is brilliant with school work. She viewed the American sign alphabet on the computer one night and now can do the alphabet in sign language all the time. She has a personality you cannot forget. Mila is now 6 years old and you cannot tell she has autism.
