Breast Cancer Awareness Day at The Oklahoma State Capitol - Part II
- hhanks, CNN iReport producer
Today marked the 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
The dominate color of the day at the Oklahoma Capitol was not the normal dark-colored business suits but that of bright Pink. Hundreds of Breast Cancer Survivors, their families and support groups flooded the 4th floor rotunda of the Oklahoma State Capitol building with various shades of Pink.
Twenty plus organizations, who raise breast cancer awareness in Oklahoma were represented at the capitol with their displays. Special guests included Miss Oklahoma--- Taylor Treat and OU Women's Basketball Coach---Sherri Coale. Both of these ladies rendered their support with their appearances to enhance the awareness of breast cancer.
Oklahoma State Senator----Judy Eason McIntrye from Tulsa, Oklahoma---(a breast cancer survivor) joined with Breast Impressions, Inc. Founder ----Judi Grove welcomed the ladies and men in pink to the Oklahoma Capitol. Breast Impressions, Inc. mission is to increase breast cancer awareness and fundraising to support breast cancer education, prevention and treatment. Breast Impressions, Inc. also donates breast casting kits to women who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. These casting kits allow those diagnosed to make a "memory" of their own prior to breast surgery. Since their inception well over 180 breast casting kits have been sent free of charge to women across the world.
Kendall Howerton, a native Oklahoman---works as a 3D artist. His lifecasting work was displayed at the capitol today.
His most recent project is a series titled "Strength in Pink" that consists of three sculptures. The third sculpture was unveiled today during the opening ceremonies at the capitol. Each sculpture is first created from a real woman's body through the process of lifecasting. It is then resculpted to create an image that's tangible and true to life. This series has been created to captivate and speak to each and every soul that opens their heart to its deeper meaning. It will move you to tears, heal your broken heart and break your selfish natures in hopes of helping to improve your life.
This afternoon a program was unveiled in both the Oklahoma House of Representatives and The Oklahoma State Senate which would save more lives in Oklahoma. Tulsa Project Woman currently provides breast health education, no cost mammography, diagnostic procedures and surgical services for women who, because of financial hardship, may delay seeking medical attention in the Tulsa area. Tulsa Project Woman is NOW going to cover the ENTIRE state of Oklahoma! Rather than the 32 counties who could turn to TPW when no insurance or low finances kept them from receiving a mammogram-----Individuals in Oklahoma can now go to Oklahoma Project Woman. All 77 counties will now receive their help.
House of Representative---Anastasia Pittman….saluted and welcomed all survivors to the capitol. Judy Eason McIntrye and Judi Grove---along with one of the Breast Cancer Survivors---Writer and Author, Linda Drew of Oklahoma City shared their stories with CNN iReport today!
Statistics in Oklahoma indicate that over the last 10 years---more than 32,000 men and women have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Statistics further indicate that over 4,000 of those diagnosed cases have ended in death.
