A Quiet Morning, Then a Murder, in Juarez
- hhanks, CNN iReport producer
Tuesday, April 27--
I knew it was only a matter of time before I’d witness the deadly violence for which Juarez has become famous. On my sixth visit in as many months, I was walking in front of a funeral home that was holding a service, a mile or two east of the tourist zone on Avenida 16 de Septiembre, when half a dozen shots broke the midmorning calm 100 yards from me. The locals started ducking and running, and I did the same. I positioned myself around the corner of the funeral home, where I stood for a minute with other passersby. I started shooting video as mourners and an employee spilled out onto the sidewalk from the funeral home to gaze at the body across the street. The crowd seemed saddened, maybe horrified, but not at all in shock. Life is cheap here, and the mundane, everyday horror of scenes like this no longer surprises.
