    Father's Day - A Personal Perspective

As a father, I maintain a different perspective on tomorrow. I celebrate my son and our close relationship (not always the case) and his triumph over a debilitating illness. I decided to create a “program” for us tomorrow, which will go something like this:

    -        A trip to the gym for one-on-one basketball, which, along with a diet, has helped up lose a combined 62 pounds in the last three months.

    -        Brunch. Nothing too special. Blueberry pancakes are out, but maybe eggs and English muffins—almost as good.

    -        A trip for me down Baby Boomer lane: leaf through my old Justice League comics (from the early 60s) (DC fan, never cared for Marvel). Also from TV of that period: Colonel Bleep, Space Explorers, and The Golden Antelope, the latter two animated serials. Snippets of these are available on Youtube for those who might remember.

    -        Key West…In Memoriam. Due to economic conditions, had to sell the timeshare. In fact, Father’s Day was always the first day of the annual week-long visit from 1996-2009. Many memories and ghosts, good, bad, and ugly—a microcosm of life?

    -        Claude Debussy: a musical interlude for contemplation and elegiac considerations.

    -        A lusty celebration song (tune stolen from the 1965 film version of Journey to the Center of the Earth). “Here’s to the prof. of all English Lit / Master of all literary sh**…”

    -        Lastly, Field of Dreams (“Back to the Sixties”), a solid Father’s Day film topped off with some Johnny Black and a pizza (OK, a day off the diet).

In all, a fine day of remembrance and recognition.
