Star Trek Exhibit - San Diego Air and Space

The Star Trek Universe has taken over San Diego.

From Captain Kirk's chair to Troi and Riker's wedding photo, this exhibit has everything a real Trekker needs to geek out for an hour or so.

The highlight is a life-sized replica of the Enterprise bridge from the original series, complete with the captain's chair. This is one of only three chairs that William Shatner used in the series; one was sold for charity and the other is in the Smithsonian.

The other series are adequately represented, though, including The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise. There are costumes (and my, were these women tiny), props, and even a huge timeline with events from all the series and movies laid out in connection to each other.

Though it's overall a great exhibit, I did see some drawbacks:

    1. - Price. I paid nearly $50 for one adult and one youth - pretty steep for an exhibit you could walk through in half an hour. (Or, you could if you weren't stopping every five feet and squealing, "Ooooh! I remember that episode!" to the chagrin of your teenager. Not that I did that.)

    2. - Photos. Fully three times in the exhibit, at all the major set pieces, you are accosted by overly-eager, nay, aggressive employees trying to take your picture, which they will of course try and sell you later. ("Hey, step onto the transporter!" Yeah, thanks. No.) Once would have been fine; three times was too much.

All in all, if you're a fan and in the area, this exhibit is definitely worth seeing.
