This iReport is part of an assignment:
Your baseball heroes |
Frank Howard is my Hero
I remember being nervous that January in 2007. Recently being diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and about to undergo an allogeneic bone marrow transplant, I turned my attention to something that has always been a fun part of my life - baseball. I've always loved baseball. Ever since my Grandad called me a smaller version of "Frank Howard" when I would visit in my little league baseball uniform.
I noticed Frank Howard would be appearing at an autograph show near my hospital and sent him a note asking if he could visit me if he had time. Before I could check into the hospital for my transplant, I received a call from Mr. Howard inviting me to his home. What a thrill to meet my childhood hero! But, the most amazing part of my story is that Frank took the time to call me every few weeks or so to check on me and give me words of encouragement. I'll never forget his kindness to me and how much he helped me during my recovery. I'm so happy that our friendship continues today. Not only an All-Star on the playing field, Frank Howard is an All-Star in life. He is the nicest person I have ever met and he deserves his nickname of "The Gentle Giant."
