Did you know that one pound of phosphorus can create 500 pounds of algae? Did you know that on July 19th, there was a phosphoric acid /oil spill in Ann Arbor and hardly anyone knows about it? Did you know that those responsible for reporting never issued a public or environmental notice? Did you know it had oil (petroleum) and phosphoric acid in it? Did you know that it involved multiple agencies, 17 firefighters and 8 firefighting vehicles (including 2 hazmat units)? Did you know they worked on it during parts of the night? Did you know that the fire department should be thanked as they did their job, but handed it off to another agency to take care of for reporting and cleanup? Did you know that other people worked on it as well? Did you know that hardly anyone spoke about it? Did you know that it was hard to find this information? Did you know that the spill was traced to an outfall located by the University of Michigan Hospital and that was traced to the University of Michigan Hospital area, but that the actual point of entry for the spill was never located? Did you know what phosphoric acid can be used for? Did you know that no one was ever charged, or fined, or even given a ticket for littering? Did you know that not one accident report or permit for dumping was found? Did you know that dumping is illegal and possibly a criminal offense? Did you know that the amount spilled is not known? Did you know that the booms placed in the water that night were compromised? Did you know that the spill ran from the hospital area to Gallup Park? Did you know that it spanned the width of the river? Did you know that it ran for hours past my vantage point? Did you know that in days following, hundreds would swim, canoe, and play in the water? Did you not know about it? Did you know that the University of Michigan Occupational Safety and ENVIRONMENTAL Health, according to the DNR did not have to notify you about it? Did you know that according to the MDNRE this type of spill is common? Did you know that Gallup Park has an algae bloom now? Did you know that one pound of phosphorus can create 500 pounds of algae?
Do you know now?
