Rene Marie Sings "Black National Anthem"
Because I like stirring up trouble apparently....
This is something that was hardly mentioned in the News, if at all. See the video to hear the "anthem".
In an event earlier this month in Denver, thrown by the Mayor, Ms. Marie, who was brought in to sing the National Anthem, gets up and instead sings, "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing". This is a VERY beauiful poem which she converted into a VERY beautiful song and she sings it very well. However...
In my personal view, her decision to sing this "black national anthem" instead of the true National Anthem is a slap in the face. While she sang the song beautifully, it is NOT what she was there to sing. Even Barak Obama stated that we only have ONE national Anthem and he thought it was wrong for her to sing this song in its place.
I find it frustrating that in a time when this country is making strides in the right direction to unify and gain acceptance for all people, there are still those who try to be devisive, either purposefully or unintentionally. But Ms. Marie's decision, in my opinion is a separatist suggestion. There is no "black nation" to go along with the "black national anthem" just as there is no "white nation" with its own anthem. We are the people of the United States and we have ONE national anthem that we all share and should take pride in. I feel that what Ms. Marie did, even though her singing was lovely, was wrong, and she should not have replaced our national anthem in such a manner.
