Muslims are not new to the United States. There is evidence to suggest actually that many Africans who were kidnapped and sold into slavery were Muslims.

A book by noted scholar Allan D. Austin titled, "African Muslims in antebellum America," follows 50 African Muslims who were sold into slavery between 1730 and 1860.

Slightly more than one-third of Muslims in this country are native-born Americans. Many of these are converts and 20  percent of the Muslims in this country are African American, according to the Pew Research Center's 2007 study "Muslim Americans: Middle Class and Mostly Mainstream."
