Riots in Maputo after the fact, 5pm
- zdan, CNN iReport producer
These are photos I took when I went to drop co-workers home today at around 5pm. Things had quieted down as the army, police and municipal police started patrolling the roads. There were many police vehicles going and coming from Matola, (a town 12kms from Maputo that has grown and where many live) which allowed those brave enough to get home. But there were times when I got nervous as there were people milling about doing nothing that helped in creating a dodgy vibe.. But then a police car would pass and we could tag along. As I am writing this a co-worker forwarded to me an sms that is circulating in the city that is urging people to continue with the riots for 3 more days.
Here are commentaries to the photos. Hopefully the photos will show up as I uploaded them so the commentaries make sense. (The numbers are the file names the camera gives)
3092 - This place we can call the city limits. The first inclination of the unrest.
3097 - The exit to Matola, the suburb and also the route to South-Africa
3099 - Tear gas released by the soldiers at groups of people hanging around waiting for the next spark
3109 - Water pipes dragged onto the road to block traffic
3110 - The remains of a Tire that was set on fire
3114 - Smoke from debris set on fire.
3117 - This is still the route to Matola and South-Africa, here we had to leave our escort to turn around as we wanted to go in a different
direction. Luckily there was another police car coming from the other side that we could follow.
3120 - The convoy making its way around the debris and small fires
3136 - A gas station vandalized and looted. One of the pumps was on
fire but fortunately they managed to put it out before it could
explode.
3140 - Same gas station as previous
