Mexico Celebrates 200 Year Birthday
September 15 marks the eve of Mexico's Independence Day. It's the most important day of the year in Mexico, and the festivities build all day leading up to midnight on the country's birthday. And they throw quite the party!
Along with the nearly half a million other people who piled into Mexico City's Zócalo square in the city's Centro Historico, I witnessed a parade unlike any I've ever seen before. It had all of the ingredients -- eye-popping colours, amazing choreography and even, at times, utter flamboyance. The resources poured into the parade, not the mention the event's overall level of organization, is absolutely astounding.
While Mexico City takes its Independence Day very seriously any year, 2010 is a milestone year. This year marks the 200th anniversary of its independence from Spain in addition to the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution.
