Sentences halved for the seven Bahai "Yaran" in Iran
RAHANA, 15 September 2010
The prison sentences of the seven Baha'i 'Yaran' (helpers) have been reduced from 20 years to 10 years by the Appeals Court in Tehran. They were charged with charged with “espionage on behalf of Israel”, “insulting the sacredness of Islam”, “propaganda against the regime,” and later “aiding, teaching and propagating the Baha‘i religion in Iran.”
At present some 50 Bahais are imprisoned in Iran on similar charges. Iran does not recognise the Bahai Faith as a legitimate religious belief.
