    Flaring Gas Crater of Darwaza, Turkmenistan

     

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     skitalac visited the crater on September 10 and captured this striking footage. He calls Moscow home.

    In 1971 Soviet geologists drilled for oil and gas in a desert of Turkmenistan. Accidentaly they hit an underground cavern, and the well crashed.

    Fortunately, nobdy was hurt, but gas started to flow. They decided to burn up the gas to prevent people and anymals from intoxication and relying that it will exhaust soon.

    But it has been burning for 39 years by now... 50 meters wide, 20 meters deep. Awesome.

    Darvaza in Turkmeni is "Gate to Hell". Indeed...
