This iReport is part of an assignment:
Black in America |
Black Women the Heart of Black America
The first addition of CNN's Black in America fell flat in my opinion. It seems there's so much they didn't cover. I realize the time is limited and the subject is multifaceted, and still, they just didn't tell a unique story. For me, the segment on black women missed the story of married, family centered, creative and beautiful sisters. It just so happens I know several of these women; I'm one of them. The segment seemed to highlight the struggle, overlooking the millions of black women who are raising children with husbands, while pursuing and finding fulfilling and purpose as individuals. It's wonderful CNN is taking an honest shot at a topic many of us live daily- I'm grateful for the effort. I simply didn't feel the dynamics of what it means to be Black in America. This is what I know to be true about black women in America.
The black women I share space and breathe air with be gorgeous, open hearted, courageous, spirit filled, vulnerable, loving, authentic, soulful, interesting, forgiving, climbing, conquering beings. I pray with them, heal with them, be down right silly with them. And we love one another deeply. Because of black women, and a few not black, I am lifted, witnessed and standing. CNN could not have captured the essence of who we be and what we bring in times of struggle and strength but I know/we know- we are a sight to behold, a true and accurate manifestation of God's glory. Like a tree pushing it roots deep and wide into the earth; then spreading its branches far and wide up towards the sky. With blossoms and leaves this season and naked in the next- but still standing under the light of the sun and the dark of the night. We be women- lovely and loving women.
