    The End of Celebrations

On Sept. 11 2001, I had a couple of reasons to celebrate. My college roommate was turning 21 and I was going to ring in my one-year anniversary with my then boyfriend, now husband on Sept. 12th. That morning, my boyfriend and I were sleeping in until he received a call from a friend who was driving down the Jersey shore to go surfing and heard on the Howard Stern show of the first attack. At first, he thought that the shock jock had just gone too far with his jokes. But then, he heard that the second tower went down and called us. Shocked out of our slumbers, my boyfriend and I scrambled to tally up the names of everyone we knew and began calling. By this time, we had to walk over to a pay phone as the cell phone didn't operate. We were lucky to hear that our loved ones were fine but that night and the next day, we found ourselves taking stock of what really matters. Birthdays and anniversaries suddenly took on a new meaning.
