The Journey to Conceive My Twins

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Robert G. Edwards, the 'father of the test-tube baby,' won the Nobel Prize for medicine on Monday. skeeskee6969 shared this adorable photo and touching story of his 5-year-old twins, Ryan Lawrence and Meghan Ann, who were conceived through in vitro fertilization.
    - katie, CNN iReport producer

My wife and I married when we were both in our early thirties and tried for almost 4 years to naturally conceive a child.  After trying on our own and not succeeding we visited my wife's OBGYN who gave us the standard advice of keep trying, using the standard ovulation measurements (temperature, body position, etc). The pressure on both of us was enormous. Our love life became work as it was scheduled and had to be conducted in an exact manner. When that failed my wife was place on hormone therapy and endured months of injections by her doctors and by me in her abdomen and glute area. I give her all the credit in the world for enduring an experience that most people would have never be able to handle. When the hormone therapy failed we were both emotionally distraught and for the first time contemplated the reality that we may not be able to have children. My wife and I researched IVF and were referred to an excellent practice that discussed all of the challenges associated with IVF, including the largest one of all, the expense! We were however determined to take the leap and proceed with the IVF. My wife went through the process of having her best eggs extracted and fertilized with my sperm and through the miracle of Robert G. Edwards' research, she became pregnant with twins! My wife gave birth to a boy, Ryan and a girl, Meghan, who are now 5 years old. For all of the emotional, and financial difficulty, the self-doubt and self-blame we went through we finally have the most precious gift of our lives. Thank you Dr. Edwards!!
