    Memories of the challenger disaster

The morning of the challenger disaster I was walking through the Mall in Abilene Texas, As I passed the radio shack one of the salesmen came running out and grabbed my arm saying "the shuttle just blew up!!" Back then Radio shack had small television sets all set up in a window and all of them had the image of the smoke trails that are now a famous image from that tragic day. At first I was confused and caught a little off guard by the salesguy

grabbing my arm. I looked at the screens and it took me a few seconds to figure out what he was so excited about. By then the scene was of people in stands watching with shocked looks. Slowly it began to dawn on me what had happend. The Space shuttle was supposed to take off that morning with the first teacher in space. shuttle launches had become so common that I'd never thought to watch it.

If that guy hadnt grabbed me and told me what happened I'd never have seen it "live" as it happened.
