    CNN30: Mexico City earthquake

    1985 Mexico City Earthquake Damage

I was living in Cuernavaca, a city about 1 1/2 hours south of Mexico City, when the earthquake hit. In fact it went through Cuernavaca on its way to Mexico City. While there was little damage to Cuernavaca, the damage to Mexico City was devastating, for this city of over 20 million souls is built on a filled-in lakebed, and it jiggled like a bowl full of jello. Two quakes of 8+ hit the city within a 36 hour period. I went to the city about a week later and took these fotos of some of the damage.
