This iReport is part of an assignment:
Do you have a unique name? |
Keturah
Keturah according to wikipedia:
In the Book of Genesis, Keturah or Ketura (קְטוּרָה "Incense", Standard Hebrew Qətura, Tiberian Hebrew Qəṭûrāh) is the woman whom Abraham marries after the death of Sarah. She bears him six sons, Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
She is styled "Abraham's concubine" (1 Chr. 1:32). Abraham married her probably after Sarah's death (Gen. 25:1-6). He also sent the sons he had by Keturah to live in the east far from his son Isaac. Rabbinic lore (midrash) holds that Keturah is Hagar.
Keturah is also the namesake of the kibbutz Ketura.
My Mom read a book called, I, Keturah. She decided if she had ever had a daughter she'd name her that. I am the only girl. Growing up I disliked my name. No one had it. My mom wanted to nickname me Katy or something, but the bus aids at pre school got it forst, so it is Torie. A lot ask how Torie comes from Keturah. My 5th grade teacher used to call me key-torah. I went to school with a Katrina, so we got confused all the time. I also get called rudely the name of a body part (sounds like my name). Spelling it is another issue, which I have learned to not be bothered by. Sometimes they miss the H, or they will use an O instead of a U. Given my problems with pronouncing the letter R at times, makes it harder to state my name.
Once when I was upset with my name I looked it up on the internet to find stats about my name, and came across the Keturah Day Spa in Perth Australia. (http://www.keturah.com.au/) I emailed my Mom, and she ordered products from there and emailed with the women named Keturah. Having products with my name on it was cool. I had never met another Keturah, until this summer. I was volenteering at a carnival, and hear someone say Keturah get over here. I was surprised. She was inline for the ride I was running, and asked her what her name was, she told me. I was like really? (I am 22, but I was so excited). I told her that's my name as well. She was as excited as I was.
On facebook there is a group called our name is Keturah. It is interesting, many in the group are African Americans. I have not heard my name much, except, sadly, on "trash, self help talkshows".
