Riots on Rue de la République in Lyon, France

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     elisampenner, an American student studying abroad, was practically run out of a part of Lyon because of tear gas. 'We are all ok and safe now, but transportation has been very much affected - all metros and trams have been ordered not to stop at the main stops in town, and there is a huge influx in the number of people therefore walking the streets trying to get places, at least in the heart of the city,' she said.

These are photos taken from a street perpendicular to Rue de la République in Lyon, France, on October 19, 2010. This was a riot started by students protesting just before the Senate meeting during which there would be a vote upon the change in retirement age (from 60 to 62 years old).
