Ring Around the Sun in Johannesburg

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     ScribeAfrica says she sent this photo to CNN iReport because 'I wanted to share the magic with the world!' Though she's seen sun halos before, she said this one was especially impressive and 'had what I like to call the "goosebump factor".'
    - katie, CNN iReport producer

A halo forms around the sun when light is refracted through the millions of tiny ice crystals contained in the thin, high clouds covering much of the sky.

This picture was taken at 10h30 today, 1 November 2010, in the skies above Johannesburg, South Africa. Weather services have at least partially attributed the sun halo to the unusual occurrence of cirrus clouds drifting in from neighbouring Botswana.

Scientific explanations aside, this magical, mystical sight has left many sometimes somewhat jaded Johannesburg residents wide-eyed with childlike wonder, and has heralded an auspicious start to the new month of November.
