Do you have a unique name?

    More from kittyblanco

a lil bit trendy, a lil bit traditional, a lil bit unique?

I wanted my children to have unique names. I also wanted them to be able to hold their heads up high as members of whatever profession they chose. My children are mixed(I am black, their father is white) but i was aware that the world will see them as black. I love how creative and unique black names are but i am also aware of the studies that show people with black names will be passed over for jobs a lot of times. So i tried to mix that creativity with practicality. I went a little bit trendy, a little bit traditional and a little bit sentimental. Parker Chaney, Sawyer Keegan, and McKenzie Virginina Mae (Virginia Mae was my mothers name.) At the time no one around me was naming their kids Parker and McKenzie...i have since found that NOT to be true...I know a father here at my job who has two boys and a girl and he named his kids parker, sawyer, and Archer...so much for my kids not having anyone elses name! I just think we should stop seeing kids as our possessions...you know? We can't just do to them what we please...they are entrusted to us, gifts even. We should treat them as such. I guarantee if the parents of that 9 year old saw her as a gift someone they are to cherish and prepare for this life they would not have named her Talula does the Hula from Hawaii!
