    Nauru dispatch

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     JOHNNYCOLT is on a special assignment from CNN.com to visit Nauru, the last country in our iReport Global Challenge. He's just arrived and shared this first snapshot and impression of the place, a tiny island in the South Pacific.

He shot the photo with an iPhone app called Instagram. It lets you add lens-like filters to the images, which is what makes the colors so dramatic here.

Imagine if no one had repaired a thing in your home since 1978. Now place your home on a tropical Island in the middle of nowhere -- that is Nauru.

Signs of Nauru's heyday are all over the island. Rusted out amphitheater, boarded-up neighborhoods and my broken down hotel.

I am staying at the island's one hotel, the Menan. There are 300 rooms at the Menan. I have  yet to see a soul walk the beach.

The beach-level bar is still the spot to watch the sunset. You can swill copious amounts of booze elbow-to-elbow with the four other Aussies in residence who live in the hotel. Of course, I skip the alcohol and head to my room to digitize today's footage. After all an iReporter's work is never done.
