Equal Justice under Law: Newly-married tonight in Dupont Circle, Washington, DC

Less than three hours after the Senate voted to repeal the 17-year old “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, Lance Corporal Byron Roman, Jr. and his husband, Jay Ely, were married in Washington DC. The couple exchanged their vows at the fountain in Dupont Circle – historically the center of Gay Washington. To add to the irony of the historic moment, the monument honors Samuel Francis Du Pont, Rear- Admiral of the Navy, whose career spanned the Mexican-American War and the War between the States. Du Pont was a noted military reformer.

Lance Corporal Roman  is the recipient of numerous service medals, and saw duty in Iraq in 2008- 2009. Upon his return home he was immediately redeployed to Afghanistan. The couple live in South Carolina.
