Polar Bear Club rings in new year with an arctic plunge

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     This was NYCfoto's third time attending the annual polar bear plunge in Coney Island, New York, but it was his first time participating. 'I think this is one of the most exhilarating activities anyone can do, and those who do it are brave people who know what they want in life,' NYCfoto said.
    - ccostello3, CNN iReport producer

Every year the most famous of all Polar Bear Clubs is ringing in start with a plunge into cold ocean waters at Coney Island, NY. This year was no exception. This year the weather smiled with unusual warmth attracting the biggest crowd in years. At exactly 1pm everyone ran into warm 38 degree weather checking off the first to-do item from their yearly list with loud cheer! We were no exception. We ran with everyone else into that cold water for a nice splash. Its hard to describe the excitement and the freezing water that engulfs you for a moment. Then you come out running towards the onlookers blocking your escape from thousands of needles poking all over your body. Its probably the best recipe for the hangover. And you go back again because it feels so alive. And, of course, the camera has never left our hands with the index finger on the trigger all the time. Thus you have first hand experience from the plunge at Coney Island 2011. For more photos go to - http://nycfoto.com/l.7VDb
