OTC Pet Flea Squeezes Killing Pets
Friday night I had to run my 4 year old German Shepherd to the Pet ER.
At 8pm, I applied some Sergeant's Gold flea and tick squeeze on her back. At 10pm, I thought her leg had fallen asleep. At 1am...I was awaken to her stumbling into walls and doors...she was drooling, shaking, panting, unable to stand and walk.
I threw her into the van and went to the nearest town with a 24 hour pet emergency room. The vet told me earlier in the night he had a cat who died from this very thing. She got a bath, and sent her home to recoup. She's fine today, sleeping and acting frightened, but physically she seems ok.
I have since looked online and found hundreds of accounts of this very thing, pets who have died, who have had lasting reactions, holes burned into skin, ER trips, seizures....all from these OTC flea and tick products. There is even an attempt at a class action lawsuit.
I called the company this week demanding payment for my vet bill and the product as well as to ask why they have not removed this product from the shelves. The customer service operator did her job...and tried to lay the blame upon me. She tells me after they receive all of the supporting paperwork, there will be a review.
No family should have to lose a pet due to these companies selling products that will kill our animals with no remorse. And if it does this kind of thing to pets, what is it doing to our children who pet them and roll around on the floor with them?
