Vulcano Island, Sicily
Vulcano is one of the Eolie Islands near Sicily, not far from Messina. It is on of the most fascinating places I've ever been. It isn't too touristy, but it has its own weird charm. Down below the volcano, there are sulphur mud baths which are supposed to be good for many ailments. (photos 8 and 9) However, plan on throwing away your bathing suit afterwards as the smell of sulphur is impossible to wash out!
We walked up to and around the crater. In the beginning we were surrounded by low brush in yellow and green along a black path. As we climbed, the smell of sulphur became stronger, the earth redder and there were yellow patches in a landscape which looked more lunar by the minute. We finally reached the top and walked all the way around the crater, which smoked and steamed all around us. We meant to go to another island the next day but were so fascinated by Vulcano that we spent a second day there.
