On the Blackened Slope of Mt Merapi

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     matny says he felt 'a feeling of sadness of the utter destruction and misery, plus a feeling of helplessness and humility when facing the awesome wrath of nature.'
    - nsaidi, CNN iReport producer

Three months after deadly hot pyroclastic flows engulfed settlements on the southern slope of Mt Merapi, the disaster is still evident during our visit to the villages of Kaliedam and Kinahrejo (about 4.5km from the volcano's summit) last weekend. More then 350 people died with about 350,000 displaced when the volcano erupted last Oct/Nov 2010. Countless houses and livestock were destroyed together with farms and forest. It was indeed a surreal and humbling experience standing on the soil blackened with fine black sand ejected from the bowels of the earth by the forceful volcano.
