    The worst vacation ever

    Determined to Die

Let me start by saying this is all going to sound like something out of a movie, but trust me I could not make this up if I wanted to. I cannot give a final total to how much this has cost us because it still continues today. I can say that it has taken a toll on me as I am trying to shield my kids from knowing any of the events that have taken place over the last month. Sorry this is long, but I have tried to leave out as much as I could and still paint the whole picture.

It all began on June 5, 2008. My wonderful husband (Micheal) of 14 years and I were taking a much needed vacation to Cancun while our 3 kids went to visit their grandparents for a few weeks this summer. We arrive in Cancun and reach our destination resort, the Omni. It was breath takingly beautiful and our room was located on the bottom floor near the pool and one of the restaurants. The first day was uneventful and relaxing.

Day 2, we went to soak up the sun down at the beach. The view was spectacular. I noticed my husband seemed a bit preoccupied and in somewhat of a trance as he watched the waves splash over the huge rocks that had been left exposed after the hurricanes from the previous years. Later that evening we decided to go out dancing and had a wonderful time.

On Day 3 Micheal said he wanted to do some snorkeling so I thought it would be a good idea to go to Isla Mujeres. Off we went by bus to the ferry port. Then we took the ferry to the island and took a cab to Garrafon Marine park located at the far end of the tiny island. My husband loves to snorkel and usually you cannot drag him out of the water. On this particular day (July 7th) I noticed after 5 minutes of swimming with the fish, Micheal had already gotten out of the water and was standing on the pier...again watching the small waves wash over the rocks below. I thought this was strange and I got out of the water and went over to the pier where he was and asked him if he was ok. He said yes, but something didn't feel right. I sat down on the end of the pier and asked him to come sit by me so we could talk. At that point, I turned just as he was falling head first (on purpose) onto one of the rocks. All I could do was scream for someone to help me get him out of the water, which they did.

I got him to the shore and into a chair and told him to sit there while I got all of our stuff together. No sooner than I got to the end of the pier to gather our snorkel gear was he back at the edge of the water. I screamed for the men that were standing there to keep him away from the water. They got him back in the chair and I finished getting our things together and we caught a taxi back to the ferry port. Along the way Micheal kept asking if we could stop and "sightsee"...over the cliffs. He begged me to "help him help me". I could not figure out what had just happened and what was wrong with him. He has no family history of mental illness nor has he ever acted strange or bizarre like this before. We had no money problems, we both had good jobs, live in a nice house, in a nice neighborhood and have 3 beautiful children. All I could think was that I needed to get back to the mainland and change our reservation so I could get him some help.

I managed to keep Micheal seated as we waited to board the ferry back to Cancun. I latched onto his arm while we were boarding and again when we were deboarding. He begged me to help him "do it" all the way back. I could not believe what I was hearing. We took a cab back to the Omni and I stopped by the front desk to get the log on info for the wireless network since we had our laptop with us. When we got back to our room I went to change clothes so we could get a bite to eat. At that point I noticed a bottle of my sleeping pills (Ambien) had been moved and was under some clothes. At that point I locked all medicine that we had with us up in a portable safe that I usually carry on vacation with us and then put that inside the room safe. I didn't mention it to him. We went to eat and then went back to the room so I could reschedule our flight.

I told Micheal to just go take a shower while I changed our reservation. He said ok and went into the bathroom. I changed our tickets from the 11th to the 8th. Our flight was scheduled to leave the next day at 4:00pm. I heard a loud "thunk" come from the bathroom area as I was getting off the computer and I ran to see if he was ok. He said he was fine, but was acting strange and had a small cut on his right cheek. The only thing I could figure it might be from is the little metal tip that is on the end of the cord that you can stretch across the shower to dry your clothes on. I'm not certain, but I think he wrapped it around his neck. I immediately ran to the phone and called the hotel security. They came to the room and he appeared calm and said he was fine, but agreed to see the hotel doctor. The security guys said the doctor was on the way and then they left.

Micheal said he was going to take a shower before they got there. I asked him to please leave the door open...I was scared. He said he was fine and shut the door. I just stood there waiting for the water to come on. It never did. He opened to door and grabbed a cup off the counter. I calmly took the cup from him and told him he didn't need that because he couldn't drink the water. I would get him a bottle of water out of the frig. At that point he grabbed the cup out of my hand, threw it on the floor, picked up a big piece of glass and went to the mirror and cut both sides of his throat and his left wrist.

All I could do was run to the phone to get security back there and run to the door. As I was holding the door open I began screaming for someone to come help and trying not to let the door close because I did not have a room key in my hand. A hotel guest that was a doctor heard me and came over to help a few minutes before the security guys got there. I have never seen so much blood in my life. There was not one inch of the floor that was not covered. He thought he succeeded and almost did had it been another centimeter. However, it was not his time to go. He spent 4 days in ICU at Galenia hospital in Cancun to the tune of approximately $30,000.

We have insurance but they don't accept but certain kinds and your bill must be paid in full before you can leave. Good thing we had good credit and several credit cards with no balance on them. The doctors and staff at the hospital and the staff at the Omni were the most wonderful people I have ever dealt with. I wish I could say the same for what we have encountered back in Georgia.

Micheal spent 13 days in Ridgeview, 2 weeks in outpatient treatment at Wellstar. We thought he was getting better until July 19th when he said he was going to the basement to work out his legs on the weight machine. After 10 minutes something told me to go check on him. I did and I could see he had drunk something, but he said it was water and I could tell it was not. I ran upstairs and told his mom to call 911, he drank something.

By the time the EMS got there his eyes were rolling and he was covered in sweat. I ran downstairs to see if I could find out what it was for the emergency crew. He drank a 32 oz. bottle of Sevin Liquid concentrate insecticide and about 16 ozs of Lamp oil. He was barely breathing when they got him to the hospital. He spent a few days in the ICU and is currently at Atlanta Medical. I am terrified for him to come home.

I don't think he will stop until he succeeds. They just say he is depressed, but my husband has never been depressed. Everyone that knows him cannot believe this. This is so out of character for him. We were supposed to be celebrating our 14th anniversary. I just wish they would do some other tests to rule out anything else. He has had 4 shock treatments and he is scheduled for 1 more this week and he said the doctor told him he might get to go home this Friday. He is on 5 different medications. My life will never be the same after our last vacation. I’m scared to have him come home because I know I cannot keep him safe.
