LEROS, GREECE - DISABLED PERSON IS VICTIM OF ANIMAL ABUSE!
The dog you see in the picture was the permanent companion of a disabled person who lives on the island of Leros. The animal was found hanged on the evening of Thursday, February 24, near the river by a passerby.
It is said, Leros, also named as "island of the damned" was the ancient birthplace of Artemis, goddess of the moon, which ironically means lunacy! An idylic island in the Dodecanese of small fertile valleys sandwiched between rolling green hills, deep coves and pretty beaches but sadly as with all Greece and its islands, is tainted by animal abuse and abandonment. These animal abuse incidents are not isolated as some would suggest but are EVERY DAY occurrences all over Greece, the once known "cradle of civilisation".
How many decades will it take to sink into the arrogant Greek Government, that animal abuse is not acceptable in a civilised society and they will lose tourism.
Leros at least does have a very good vet and an english lady gave up 15 years of her life to neutering cats and generally caring for the strays there, but retired a year or so ago. It is hoped that her successors will do an equally good job there.
Hopefully, the authorities in Leros will investigate this awful incident, which generally, is hardly ever the case with animal abuse incidents in Greece.
