    Domestic E85 Cheaper Than Gasoline

I had the opportunity to take a MPGomatic Alt Fuel road trip in a brand-new 2011 Buick Regal Turbo running both conventional unleaded gasoline and domestically-produced E85 Ethanol last month.

It was an eye-opening experience. I paid less for E85 than I did for unleaded regular. The Regal performed flawlessly, although there was (an expected) slight drop in mileage.

Ethanol is relatively inexpensive and plentiful in parts of America, but gets a bad rap because the first-generation fuel is produced largely from corn.

But second-generation ethanol can come from lots of different places and feedstocks, many of which can be sourced locally.
