Georgia-Russia conflict |
Georgia and South Ossetia at war
I am currently living in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, which as of last night is at war with the breakaway autonomous region of South Ossetia. These are the latest updates according to Georgian media sources and my sense of feelings on the ground as of 12 noon Tbilisi time August 8th (4 am EST).
President Saakashvili (Aug 8): "Georgia was not an initiator of this
confrontation and Georgia will not give up its territories, Georgia
will not say no to its freedom… We have already mobilized tens of
thousands of reserve troops. Mobilization is ongoing… Hundreds of
thousands of Georgia should stand together and save Georgia." (civil.ge)
***UPDATE: 3:50 am Tbilisi time August 9 (7:50 pm EST August 8): I've been trying to post a follow-up video but am getting messages that the server is either down or busy. There were mass demonstrations in Tbilisi tonight in favor of Georgian actions and I hope to post the pictures and the video here as soon as I can. Thanks for all the well wishes. Most people here are just waiting to see what the morning brings...
