Stay Cool Watching Blue Whales Off the California Coast
The dog days of August bring the largest animals on Earth to the coastal waters of southern California. In our short, two-hour tour off Dana Point aboard the Ocean Adventures today, a group of 46 whale watchers, including me and my 82-year-old mom, saw four blue whales, a mother-calf pair, and two 75-foot behemoths, one of which stayed on the surface and lounged around for several minutes. We got within spraying distance of its blow, really close at one point (see video). The other one showed flukes at least three times. The crowd cheered. They are truly one of the most magnificent animals in our world ocean.
