This iReport is part of an assignment:
Uniquely India |
Mumbai's work cultures
The Dhobi are an occupational caste specializing in washing clothes. At Dhobi Ghat (first two photos), as many as 10,000 washers hand-wash perhaps a million articles of clothing in a day. Each washer is assigned a workspace, where they may work up to 15 hours a day. This is one of the largest washer's areas, situated in one of the world's largest cities (Mumbai).
Dharavi (last two photos) is said to be Asia's largest slum, and is also where some scenes from Slumdog Millionaire were shot. Despite being a slum, hardworking individuals are not in short supply, as cottage industries thrive. With schools located in the slum, Dharavi's "slum economy" shows signs of hope.
