    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Discerner became interested in her family history through her Aunt Julie who once exclaimed, 'Who's the white guy on the wall?' She started digging and learned that Peter Hunt's father was from Ireland. She now knows her family history to the ninth century. 'I'm just bursting with joy because now I know the story, know the truth.'

    This is a picture of my ggg-uncle Peter Hunt, a former slave in Mississippi (1844-1915). He was the son of a slave owner and one of his slaves, named America. Once emancipated by President Abraham Lincoln, Peter joined the United States Colored Troops of the Union Army. I also have copies of his pension paperwork. Using these, and other documents, as well as incorporating our oral family history, I was able to fairly accurately document his life in a family book - A Mulatto Slave, the Events in the Life of Peter Hunt, 1844-1915.
