Historic Markers Record Past Centers
The path to Plato, Missouri, as the center of the U.S. population, was a long one.
Indiana was the center for 6 census counts between 1890 to 1940. Afterwards the center moved through Illinois and then on to Missouri.
Small cornerstones or similar markers are found in Indiana that mark these calculations of "centerhood."
This photo was taken recently in Bloomington, Ind., which was declared the nation's center after the 1910 U.S. center. The marker is embedded in the Monroe County courthouse grounds.
Bloomington is the home of the main campus of Indiana University.
