Palm Sunday 2011 celebration in the Philippines

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Palm Sunday is an important holiday in the heavily Catholic Philippines. rolandroldan says the people who make these elaborate palm frond decorations 'have learned to make it through generations of doing the job. It's just like weaving baskets made of bamboo skin. It takes skills to interwine and weave those palms for use on yearly Palm Sunday festivities. Usually they make around 10-15 palaspas daily.' The palm decorations are then sold to churchgoers for the equivalent of about 50 cents in U.S. dollars.
    - rachel8, CNN iReport producer

Palm Sunday in the Philippines is most dramatic. To commemorate the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, Filipino Catholics bring their palaspas or decorated palm fronds to church to be blessed by the priests. It is always a sight to behold when young fresh coconut leaves called ibus are transformed into intricate forms and shapes.
